DESCRIPTION: A lasting and well renowned book, published anonymously. The book was very popular and rivalled Mrs Glasse's book. In her early sixties Maria Rundell (1745-1828) began to assemble a manuscript collection of recipes for the use of her daughters. the chance visit of a family friend, one John Murray, a publisher and a chancer, was to transform what had been essentially private and domestic exercise into one of the great publishing successes of the century. The New System of domestic cookery broke new ground in its sensible matter-of-fact tone. It was addressed to 'managers of families', or aspiring ones, and presumed little. It still reads well after all these years.
first published in 1806 and instantly successful it ran into over sixty editions by the 1840s. However any pre-1830 edition is rare.
